Beyond the lab

University clubs, STEM education, and time outdoors

Most of what I do outside research comes back to the same two things: building communities around earth science, and being outside in the environment I study.

Leadership

President โ€” Marie Tharp Society

Dept. of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Columbia University

I lead the official undergraduate student society of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, hosting social mixers, faculty Q&As and panels, geology movie nights, and student-led tours of Lamont.

President โ€” Zen Buddhism Club

Columbia University

I organize weekly in-person retreats at Columbia and bi-monthly meditation sessions at Columbia and NYU reaching roughly 130 attendees, booking venues, coordinating campus access, maintaining social media and PR, and representing the club at campus club fairs.

Vice President โ€” Columbia University Cycling Team

Columbia University

I coordinate training four times a week and racing, apply for school recognition, recruit members, and run the team's communications.

Volunteering

Climate Lab, American Museum of Natural History

New York, NY

I explain climate processes to museum visitors, most of them children, through hands-on activities: the thermohaline circulation, the biological carbon pump, solar radiation and albedo, and the greenhouse effect.

Open House, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

Palisades, NY

I taught children about paleobotany by making bookmarks from plant-extract paper chromatography.

Fleischer Family Farm

Denver, Colorado

Six weeks on a two-acre organic farm as a Laidlaw Scholar: weeding, soil tilling, transplanting seedlings, harvesting, and biological pest control, plus hosting weekly farm stands. I presented the experience at the North America Laidlaw Scholars Conference at Brown University.

World Oceans Day, United Nations

UN Headquarters, New York, NY

Facilitated guest check-in and backstage set-up for an event with 30+ speakers and 350+ attendees.
